The beginning of autumn is the thirteenth solar term of the "24 solar terms" and also the beginning of autumn. Dou refers to the southwest, with the sun reaching a yellow longitude of 135 °. It intersects on August 7th or 8th of the Gregorian calendar every year. 'Standing' is the meaning of the beginning; Autumn "means the grain is ripe. The changes in the entire natural world are a gradual process, and the beginning of autumn is a turning point where the yang energy gradually decreases and the yin energy gradually lengthens, gradually transitioning from yang excess to yin excess. In nature, everything begins to grow from prosperity to maturity.
The Beginning of Autumn is the third hottest solar term among the 24 solar terms, second only to the Great Heat and Minor Heat. In terms of the order of solar terms, Chushu(the final heat) occurs after the beginning of autumn, and only the second solar term in autumn, "Chushu" (the final heat), finishes heat. The twenty-four solar terms have the "three heats" (small heat, big heat, and final heat), with a "beginning of autumn" solar term sandwiched between the "three heats". After the beginning of autumn, Chushu (final heat) comes. The "three heats" and "three summers" both represent high temperature and scorching weather, and the "three summers" involve the four solar terms of "small heats", "big heats", "beginning of autumn", and final heat". Among the 24 solar terms, the hot days are relatively long.
The beginning of autumn means that precipitation, humidity, etc. are at a turning point in the year, tending to decrease or reduce. Starting from the beginning of autumn, the yang energy gradually decreases and all things are restrained. The beginning of autumn, along with the beginning of spring, the beginning of summer, and the beginning of winter, are collectively referred to as the "Four Rites" and are also one of the "Four Seasons and Eight Seasons" in ancient times. Autumn is the season for ripening and harvesting of the grain. During the beginning of autumn, there was a custom in ancient times among the people to worship the land god and celebrate the harvest. There are also customs such as "sticking autumn fat", "biting autumn", and "drying autumn".
