What is the difference between a sleeve bearing and a bushing? In a word: nothing. A bushing is a tube or sleeve that permits linear or rotational movement, which is exactly what a sleeve bearing is. The terms can be used interchangeably.
Flange bushings are sleeve type bearings with a “flange” or “shoulder” on one end. The flange serves multiple functions. It can assist in alignment and mounting of the bearing.
Sleeve bearings (sometimes called bushings, journal bearings or plain bearings) facilitate linear movement between two parts. Sleeve bearings consist of a metal, plastic or fiber-reinforced composite sleeves that reduce vibrations and noise by absorbing friction between two moving parts using a sliding motion.
