Slotted screw heads have a single horizontal indentation referred to as the slot. The fastener head is driven by a “common blade” or flat-bladed screwdriver. The slot has a flat bottom and are good for low torque low speed applications.

Slotted drive screws are perhaps the simplest you'll find. This common type of screw drive has a straight line through the middle. They are driven using flat head screwdrivers or drills with flat head bits. They are common for projects that use hand-driven tools or require little torque.

A self tapping screw is a screw that creates threads in the material that it is being fastened, unlike its machine screw counterpart. Self tapping is not a reference the tip of the screw but how the threads are designed to mate with the materials being joined.

A self-tapping thread-cutting screw would typically be used in wood or metal, and it cuts material out of its way as it enters and drives inward. Self-tapping screws are normally made either from carbon steel or stainless steel, but they have other qualities that change their appearance and chemical composition.
