There are two type so dowel pins, one is Precision, the other one is Grooved.

Precision dowel pins are usually made of steel or stainless steel and range in diameter from ⅛'' to around 1.25'' .

Groove dowel pins are less commonly used, and are only offered in a few sizes.

Regarding the depth of dowel pins in parts, for transition and interference fits a depth of 2x to 3x the nominal pin diameter is recommended. For a clearance fit lower depth is recommended to reduce the risk of the pin getting stuck: 1x to 2x the nominal pin diameter.

Unlike Spring Pins, Solid Dowels rely on material displacement between the pin and the host components for the press fit. This requires a considerably higher installation force than either Spring Pin and requires that the holes to be precision machined, which increases cycle time and manufacturing costs.

Dowel connectors are great for connecting two pieces of wood. These connectors get reinforced with glue which secures the joint, making it much stronger than a screw. You can insert a dowel into either side of the wood so that the load remains evenly distributed and the connection is less likely to fail.
