The origin of the word 'washer', in this context, is not known but it has been used since the 14th century when it was spelled 'whasher' and defined as “an iron hoope, amongst gunners called a whasher, which seves to keep the iron pin at the end of the axeltree from wearing the nave”.
Available in #6, #8 and #10 diameters. Available from 1/2” up to 1 1/2” lengths. Available with 12, 15, 16 or 18 diameter heads, depending on the size, for greater load-bearing surface.
As already mentioned, Phillips head screws prevent camming out – but if too much torque is applied, it will slip out, and it's designed to do that. The reason: this prevents a power tool from twisting off the screw head. Keep in mind that removing a stripped Phillips head screw is incredibly difficult.
