The main difference between castle and slotted nuts is found on the turret end section where the split pin is found. On the castle nut the end section is turned down slightly, enabling the split pin to be wound round and pinned against the turret so that the pin does not protrude. On a slotted nut this is not possible.
Why do castle and slotted nuts have slots?" Castle nuts and slotted nuts have slots so that they can accommodate a cotter, split or taper pin or wire, which prevents the nut from loosening.
It's called a "castle nut" because of the evenly spaced wrench notches that make it look like the top of a medieval castle's tower. You stake the castle nut to the receiver endplate to prevent it from backing out, which in turn prevents the receiver extension from working loose.
